Your trauma is not your fault, but your healing is your responsibility
Many of us have grown up in a home that was full of toxicity. When we are younger, we think this toxicity is normal. As we get older, we start to realize that this toxicity is absolutely not normal.
Breaking Generational Cycles is difficult!!!
Our childhood determines the person we become, which ultimately is based on our parents childhood because your parents are teaching you what their parents taught them.
It isn’t until we get into a relationship or a specific life chagrining event occurs that we realize that the generational patterns we were taught aren’t really healthy.
Broken children tend to grow into broken adults who break children. You can stop the cycle. You can heal from your past instead of passing it along to your children. You can make a better future for your children by making a better version of you.
Steps to Breaking Generational Cycles
1. BECOME AWARE
Become aware of your family’s destructive patterns. This is the first step to moving towards a healthier you. You can not change what you are not aware of.
2. TAKE OWNERSHIP AND FORGIVE YOURSELF
Take ownership of your own actions, attitudes, beliefs, and emotions. Even though you were taught that these actions, attitudes, beliefs, and emotions were normal, it is up to you to change them. The first step to changing them is to take ownership of them and forgive yourself.
3. PURPOSELY OBSERVE
Purposely observe and compare/contrast how other families’ interact and handle similar situations. How do other families’ react to each other during conflict?
4. EDUCATE YOURSELF
Read books on:
- family roles
- adult attachment pain
- adult children of alcoholics
- boundaries in relationships
- signs somebody is manipulating in a relationship
- What is a healthy relationship?
- How am I suppose to treat someone of the opposite sex?
5. EVALUATE YOUR PRESENT RELATIONSHIPS
Evaluate your present relationships. Are they healthy? Unhealthy? Are you blamed for everything? Are your boundaries respected?
6. BE PATIENT
Be patient because change takes time. It is important to understand that as you change, you may need to detach from toxic relationships.
